The implications of the introduction of IFRS for SMEs with BDO
This half day course is likely to be relevant to those involved with the preparation of financial statements at all UK Hotel Companies which are not small and are currently reporting under UK GAAP.
The ASB published its proposals for the future of UK GAAP in August 2009 and, from as early as 2012, IFRS (or the abridged SME version) is likely to be the default accounting framework in the UK.
The ASB is proposing a three tier approach as follows:
Tier Nature of entity Accounting regime
1 Listed and publicly accountable Full EU endorsed IFRS
2 Non-publicly accountable entities IFRS for SMEs
3 Small (as currently defined)* FRSSE
* Companies that do not exceed two of the following criteria (Turnover £6,500,000, Balance Sheet Total £3,260,000, Average number of employees 50)
For companies in tiers 2 and 3 they will have the option to "trade up" to higher tiers. For all companies, with the exception of those adopting the FRSSE, the conversion of their financial statements to a new form of GAAP is likely to be onerous and challenging. The potential issues they are likely to face are significant and are likely to include:
- Financial statements needing to be rewritten.
- IT and reporting systems requiring reconfiguration.
- Debt covenants becoming problematical under the new GAAP.
- Bonus and option schemes proving unworkable.
- Accounting staff and the board need retraining.
This course is delivered by subject experts from BDO.
