BAHA is delighted to announce a selection of new CPD courses for 2006 on topics particularly relevant to both financial professionals and non financial managers in the hospitality industry.
Using a range of experienced facilitators we are able to offer courses using blended delivery which includes face to face classroom learning supported with online discussion forums and access to online resources, for a period both prior and after the class room sessions. All our courses are offered to suit both the individual learner and corporate learners.
Open courses enable candidates to study and network with participants from other organisations and share experiences. Specific company courses enable organisations to tailor the course content and branding of the presentation to suit the needs of their own organisation. All courses are delivered by experienced facilitators using a variety of resources including presentations, worked examples, case studies, online libraries and discussion forums and video presentations.
The courses offered are designed to comply with the widely accepted requirements for structured CPD activities as specified by professional bodies such as the ACCA. All courses are delivered:
- by an appropriately qualified facilitator with in-depth knowledge and experience of the topic and the application to the hospitality industry
- using pre-prepared course materials, clearly specified aims and objectives supported by a range of resources
- to a minimum of six candidates using face to face delivery in a classroom setting supported by online discussion facilitated by a tutor both prior and after the classroom session.
Debra Adams BSc, ACMA, MA, ABHA
Debra is Course Director of the BAHA Education and Training Programme and is an experienced facilitator having delivered courses in financial awareness to a number of clients including Compass Group, De Vere Hotels, Thistle Hotels, Whitbread Hotels and Granada plc including visiting lecturer roles at IHMI Cornell University, Paris; IHTTI Neuchatel, Switzerland; Ceylon Hotel School, Sri Lanka; School of Hotel and Tourism Management, Cyprus and Les Roches, Switzerland.
Cathy Burgess MPhil, CdipAF, FBHA, FHCIMA
Cathy Burgess qualified in Hospitality Management at Leeds Polytechnic (now Leeds Metropolitan University) and then spent thirteen years in various operational and financial management positions within the hotel and catering industry. Her later appointments were as a financial controller with Marriott Corporation and Thistle Hotels. She is now a Senior Lecturer in Accounting at Oxford Brookes University, teaching financial management to degree and masters level students, and gained her MPhil in 1993. She maintains close links with industry through research and consultancy and as a Council member of the British Association of Hospitality Accountants, for which she has been elected an Honorary Fellow. Her current research interests include the role and professional development of the hospitality financial manager.
Managers working in hospitality today need to understand the fundamentals of business finance so that they can manage resources effectively and plan for the future. Planning for profitable revenue and managing costs such as materials, wage and salaries and overheads are all part of the managers daily work. The ability to interpret information and communicate effectively with departmental teams as well as the finance manager is vital.
This one day course, delivered in association with arena4|finance is a must for those managers who regularly face weekly and monthly business reviews and need to discuss business performance with confidence with colleagues and team members. The highly interactive style of delivery provides delegates with the opportunity to learn how to decipher the accounting jargon and focus on what really counts.

The role of the management accountant is continually evolving with the increasing use of technology and the focus on driving business performance. This course provides you with an opportunity to learn more about the role of the management accountant as business advisor and commercial analyst.
This course is aimed at FC's whose role is developing to include working closely with other managers in the business to develop business performance. The focus of the course is on developing effective communication skills for the presentation of accounting information and advice to non accountants. This is a highly interactive course and participants will be required to work in small groups on a variety of tasks including the preparation of presentations and role play situations.

This course explores the range of capital investment appraisal methods available for assessing projects and attempts to explode some of the myths associated with the application of the methods and business risk.This course is aimed at FC's and GM's who wish to update their knowledge of the latest thinking with regard to capital investment appraisal techniques.
